In a recent edition of the "On Language" column in the New York Times Magazine, William Safire examined the usage and etymology of the now ubiquitous phrase "I don't do ____," suspecting it to be rooted in the once stereotypical housekeeper's assertion of "I don't do windows."

In this way, the title of Nini Blancq-Cazaux's first solo show, "I Don't Do Crowds" is at once an ironic nod to the typical art opening and the identification of literal, self-imposed constraints within her own work. Like Safire's proverbial housekeeper, Nini makes (and reserves the right to break) her own rules.

The selection of photographs for this (also inaugural) show for E/S/P (Elbahara Schultz Projects) suggests elements of the artificial within otherwise natural contexts, but places them in a strange harmony: a basketball hoop suspended inexplicably against an overgrown, leafy backdrop; a gang of tarp-covered jet-skis only slightly perceptible through rows of wild plants; a dusty window's reflection of trees encroaching ominously from behind.

Under this specific umbrella of "don't do"-ing, Nini documents the vestiges of human presence, but erases the hands that put them there.

Nini Blancq-Cazaux was born in McAllen, Texas in 1984. She was raised in Monterrey, Mexico, and studied at UANL (Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon) and CEDIM (Monterrey Center for Advanced Design Studies). Her work has been shown in Miami and Monterrey with FIFI Projects (New York). She currently lives in Mexico City.
