Born in Illinois, and currently based in Mexico City, photographer Mark Powell presents his first solo show in Mexico, with a selection of some of his most recent works. Taken in Detroit and during his time in Mexico, his photographs document his every day life while simultaneously exploring the complex relationship between photography and memory, subject and object. Witnesses to an American Dream gone astray, the portraits and landscapes of Powell evoke Walt Whitman's 'American Project': the construction of a great American poem through the images of those who inhabit it, the things that compose it, and the longing – in the words of Susan Sontag – to be one with the photographed object, to uncover the deep (and equally elusive) beauty inherent to each and every one of them.

Nacido en Illinois, y actualmente basado en el Distrito Federal, el fotógrafo Mark Powell presenta su primera exposición individual en México en Febrero de 2009, una selección de algunos de sus trabajos más recientes. Tomadas en Detroit, o durante su estadía en México, sus fotografías documentan la vida cotidiana de Powell, al tiempo que exploran la compleja relación entre fotografía y memoria, sujeto y objeto. Testigos de un American Dream que se revela esquivo, los retratos y paisajes de Powell nos remiten al Proyecto Americano de Walt Whitman: la construcción de un gran poema americano a través de imágenes de quienes lo habitan, las cosas que la componen, y el deseo de querer –en palabras de Susan Sontag- ser uno con los objetos fotografiados, encontrar la profunda (y por momentos también esquiva) belleza inherente a todos y cada uno de ellos.
